Let’s Talk Estrogen: Why It Matters for Your Vulva

One of the most common (and least talked about) issues I see is vulvar discomfort — itching, burning, dryness, or pain with intimacy. What many women don’t realize is that these symptoms are often connected to one powerful hormone: estrogen.

Estrogen isn’t just about periods and pregnancy. It's essential for the health of your vulva, vagina, and pelvic tissues at every life stage.

What Does Estrogen Do for the Vulva?

Estrogen keeps vulvar and vaginal tissues thick, elastic, and well-lubricated. It boosts blood flow, maintains healthy pH, and helps prevent irritation and tearing.

Think of estrogen as the moisturizer and strength coach for your pelvic tissues — when it’s present in healthy amounts, everything feels supple and strong.

When Estrogen Drops, Symptoms Rise

There are natural phases of life when estrogen dips:

  • Postpartum (especially while breastfeeding)

  • Perimenopause and menopause

  • After certain medical treatments (like chemotherapy or removal of ovaries)

Low estrogen can lead to:

  • Vaginal dryness or tightness

  • Itching or burning

  • Pain with intercourse

  • Increased risk of UTIs

  • Thinning, pale vulvar tissue

This condition is often called Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) or Genitourinary Syndrome of Lacation— and it affects more women than you’d think.

Many of my patients feel confused or even ashamed when these symptoms show up. But here’s the truth: this is a medical issue with solutions, not something you have to “just live with.” Whether you're 6 months postpartum or 15 years postmenopause, support is available.

Topical Estrogen (prescribed by your provider): A tiny dose applied directly to the vulva or vagina can make a huge difference. It’s low-risk, highly effective, and restores tissue health over time.

Vulvar Moisturizers and Lubricants: Look for unscented, pH-balanced products. Moisturizers are for daily use; lubricants are for intimacy.

Pelvic Floor PT: We help improve blood flow, release tension, and teach you how to care for these delicate tissues — especially if you're dealing with pain or tightness.

Estrogen plays a huge role in vulvar comfort and pelvic health. If things don’t feel “right,” you’re not imagining it, and help is out there.

You deserve to feel good in your body. Let’s normalize this conversation, because your vulvar health matters at every stage of life.

If you have questions or think low estrogen might be affecting you, talk to your provider or reach out to a pelvic health specialist. You’re not alone, and there are real, effective ways to feel better.
