Moms all know how hard it is to take care of themselves and their families. We wake up early to get everything ready and we stay up late cleaning up so the next day can go smoothly. We’ve also all heard that we should “fill our cup” first but that seems impossible some days. How am I supposed to take time for myself when there are dishes in the sink, I haven’t swept in days (or weeks) and the kids need to be near me every moment of the day. These 4 tips are really about building activities into your day that take care of you. They don’t need to be overwhelming, a ton of extra work or seemingly impossible tasks. Just start with just 1 something simple and make today 1% better than yesterday.
Eating healthy and nutritious food is a great way to practice self care on a daily basis. The food we put into our body changes how we feel in a very tangible way. It can give us more energy, it can help us build muscle, it can help us manage our negative thoughts so that we are kind to ourselves and our kids. The basics come down to eating more whole, nutritious foods such as
Lean proteins
Vegetables
Fruits
Variety of grains (not just always spaghetti that the kids will eat)
Drink water
Mindfulness is another great tool for self care that helps us be aware of our negative thoughts such as body shaming ourselves, judging others and beating ourselves up for not being perfect. None of those things are helpful and many of us have dozens of these thoughts every hour. So many that we may not even realize we are having them. Mindfulness can be full meditation sessions but it could be something much more simple than that and easier. Mindfulness is taking a few moments wherever you are to focus on one of your senses.
Here’s a super simple exercise you can do right now. Close your eyes and place your fingertips on your leg or other surface. Feel the texture of the surface. Is it rough or soft, bumpy or smooth? Is it cold or warm? Think about those feelings and let everything go for 10 seconds.
Congratulations! You’ve just done something for self care and it only took a few seconds. If you continue to practice this you’ll notice it gets easier and you can use it in the moments when your kids are running through the house yelling. If you want guidance on this, I highly recommend Positive Intelligence by Shirzad Chamine. It’s a great read or program you can go through.
Let’s not forget about your physical health. So often we tell ourselves that there isn’t time for us to workout and that nagging pain or leaking is just part of your life now. That doesn’t have to be the case and you deserve better. Exercise doesn’t need to be 2 hours of cardio and really that’s not the most beneficial for most people. A combination of weight training and cardio activity will help with bone health, strength, energy, weight loss and mental health.
But if you’re struggling with leaking, pressure, weakness or pain and it’s preventing you from exercising, get that taken care of and get back to the life you want. You can spend months or years wishing it away or you can get to the root of the problem, get relief and live the life of your dreams.
Many of these 4 self care tips can be done with kids around and the age of your kids can make a big difference in your available time but you can also carve out time for yourself. Hiring a nanny to give yourself time to take a shower without a kid staring through the glass, to do the grocery shopping or meal prep for you, or to give you time to go to a workout or physical therapy appointment without worrying about your little ones. You deserve to make time for you!
