Why Do Birth Prep with a Pelvic PT

Pregnancy is a wild time. You might feel sick, exhausted or energized. You’ve got everyone telling you what to do, commenting on your body and choice of baby names and you’re worried that you might ruin your kid by eating a piece of salami.

On top of all that there are what seems like 3 million classes to take and things to buy!  We don’t want to be just another thing to check off your list so this is our checklist to

help you decide if birth prep with a pelvic PT is

worth it.

What is birth prep?

  • Improve your mobility, strength and coordination to allow your body to feel good during pregnancy, move in labor and recover more easily

  • Improve your posture and mobility to allow baby to get into an optimal position for birth and move through the birth canal without getting stuck

  • Assessing your risk factors for severe tearing in birth and having an open conversation about your options

What isn’t birth prep?

  • Teaching your partner how to massage your back or squeeze your hips

  • Lamaze, Hypnobirthing or any other birth class

  • A one time session that guarantees an easy birth

Who should do birth prep with a PT?

  • Anyone wanting an unmedicated birth

    • Getting your body prepped makes things smoother, faster and easier

  • Anyone with a family history of severe tearing in birth or genetic factors (such as Asians)

    • This increases your risk of tearing so addressing this early can help prevent

  • Anyone who has struggled with pelvic floor, hip or back pain or stiffness/tension

    • These are signs that your body may be limited in mobility and increase the odds that baby won’t be able to get into an ideal position for labor to progress without interventions.

  • Anyone who wants an easier recovery postpartum

    • We see it over and over again… the Moms who work with us prenatally recover faster, understand more about their body and feel better postpartum!

Who should not do birth prep?

  • Anyone who wants a quick fix - There isn’t a guaranteed quick fix that will make everything perfect during birth.
